Hazel Johnson

Hazel Johnson, 89, died Thursday, March 3, 2016 Benedictine Court in St. Peter.

Funeral is 11:00 am Monday, March 7, 2016 at Scandian Grove Lutheran Church, Norseland, with visitation one hour prior to the service. In Lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Hazel Ellen Johnson was born in Minneapolis, MN on March 26, 1926 to Wilfred R. and Carrie (Crocker) Knox. In 1929, they moved to Nevis, MN where she attended school, graduating in 1943 from high school. After studying a year at Minnesota Bible College, she entered nurses’ training as a Cadet Nurse at St. Andrew’s Hospital in SE Minneapolis. She graduated in 1947 and obtained her Registered Nurse license that year. She continued working at St. Andrew’s until moving to Gaylord in 1949 to work in Dr. Olson’s Hospital. She worked at the Gaylord community Hospital, Grandview Care Center in St. Peter and for the Minnesota State Board of Health, retiring in 1998.

On February 24, 1950, she married Gerald Johnson at the Portland Ave Christian church in Minneapolis. They were blessed with six children: Barbara, Deborah, Kevin, Mary, Julie and Collin. Hazel has been a member of Scandian Grove Lutheran Church since her marriage and has served as Sunday school teacher, council and choir member and was active in WELCA. She enjoyed traveling, reading, cross word puzzles, quilting and Bible Study Fellowship.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry; children: Deborah (Dave) Grant, Kevin Johnson, Mary (Steve) Johnson, Julie (Dan) O’Niell and Collin (Tammy) Johnson; 9 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by daughter Barbara Saxton, grandchild Craig Johnson and great grandchild Liam Appel.
