John Malmborg

March 22, 1939 — October 25, 2015

John Frederic Malmborg of St Peter, MN passed away Sunday October 25, 2015 after a long courageous battle with cancer. John was born March 22, 1939 in Minneapolis, MN and graduated from Minnehaha Academy in 1957. He moved to St Peter where he attended Gustavus Adophus College until he joined the Army National Guard in June of 1959. Also in June of 1959, John and a friend started the Pizza Villa in St. Peter, beginning a long history of entrepreneurship in St Peter for John. John began working at Randolph Body Shop in 1970, purchasing it in 1975. John operated John's Auto Body Shop and Alignment for 24 years until two floods and a tornado forced him to close the doors in 1999. John proudly served the community as a volunteer for the St. Peter Fire Department for 34 years. While semi-retired John worked for seven years as a meter reader for the City of St Peter. John married Virginia Dwyer on November 22, 1958 and had three children (Deb, Kris and Ann). On Sept 14, 1973 John married Judi McDougall Cowman and she and her three children (Lori, Kim and Nancy) joined him in St Peter. John was an active member of First Lutheran Church for over 50 years, serving on the church council as well as the building and cemetery committees. John was actively involved in the community, including the Masonic Lodge, American Legion Post #37, Redman Club, and the Lions. In any organization in which he was involved, one would find John working diligently behind the scenes. John enjoyed camping, fishing, and a cigar in front of a campfire. His grandmother introduced him to Swedish egg coffee at the age of five, and it became a lifelong pleasure. John enjoyed frequent outings to the St. Peter Food Co-op or McDonald's where he took pleasure in an "exquisite" cup of coffee and good conversation with friends. John's friends and family loved him as a quiet, caring, humble, honest, hard working, stubborn Swede. Family was very important to John, and he and Judi relished their time with their daughters and grandchildren. John is survived by his wife Judi, his sister Elisabeth of Minneapolis, his daughters and grandchildren, Deb (Dale) Brandt of Horace, ND, and their daughter Dacotah, Lori Cowman (Ed Smith) of Brooklyn Park, Kris (Dale) Janning of Robbinsdale, and their daughter Megan, Kim (John) Butenhoff of Walla Walla, WA and their sons Jacob, and Joseph, Nancy Hernandez of St Peter, and her daughters, Rochelle and Rosie, and Ann (Rob) Nielsen of Prior Lake, and their children Katie and Cole, as well as many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, Carl T. and Eva Malmborg, his sister Nancy Johnson, and his great-grandson Orion, and other extended family. Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at First Lutheran Church in St. Peter. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 27th at First Lutheran Church with a Masonic Service at 7:00. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
