Verona Johnson

March 15, 1924 — June 10, 2015

Verona went to be with her Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 10. She was born at her parent's, Nora (Nygard) & Edwin Thrugstad, farm home near Hitterdahl Church in Milton, ND on March 15, 1924. She lived in Saskatchewan Province from age 3-6 and returned to ND. Verona attended Mayville Teacher College and began her lifelong teaching career in a one room country school. On May 4, 1945 she was wed to Arnold E Johnson at Aadalen Lutheran Church, in Fairdale, ND. She and Arnold were both very active in their church, teaching Bible study and playing music. Together they were involved in "Child Evangelism" where they traveled around western ND organizing and teaching in Bible schools. She had a variety of teaching careers, including about 16 years in the Ransom Co. school system in and around Lisbon, ND. In 1974 she started an Accelerated Christian Education School at First Baptist Church in Brainerd, MN. She completed her teaching career in Kramer, ND and retired to take care of her mother in 1987 in McIntosh, MN. In 1997 she moved to St. Peter, MN and remained very active in her church and with her family. Verona loved life. She enjoyed spending time with family, playing piano, church activities, crocheting, and coffee "just a half cup." She is survived by Leonard (Sondra) Johnson of Virginia Beach VA, Audrey (Michael) Mikkelson of Stillwater MN, Verna (Wayne) Jensen of Hazen ND, David (Nancy) Johnson of Chaska MN & Paul (Jane) Johnson of St Peter MN. She has 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, & 2 great-great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mildred Axvig of Cathedral City CA & Edwina (Jim) Flom of Milton ND as well as many nieces & nephews. Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Bethel Baptist Church in Mankato, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, and brother.
