William D. Harvey, 90, resident of St. Peter, MN died on Tuesday, November 18, 2014. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm on Sunday, November 23, 2014 at the Church of St. Peter in St. Peter. Visitation in Spencer, Iowa will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 pm Monday the 24th at Warner Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, November 25th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. St. Peter Funeral Home ~Klein Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Mr. Harvey was born in rural Palo Alto County, Iowa in 1924 to Albert Lee and Henrietta (Sherlock) Harvey. He attended country school and was graduated from Silver Lake High School, Ayrshire Iowa in 1942. He served in the Merchant Marines and Army during World War II and was recalled in the Army for the Korean War. He attended college in 1955 and was graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD in 1959. That year, he accepted a teaching position of English at St. Peter High School, St. Peter MN where he taught for 34 years. In 1970, he went to England where he visited Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey and visited graves of 30 English authors. The following year, he returned to England, Scotland and Ireland to complete the visit of 60 graves. He completed his trip at the Normandie Cemetery, where he visited cousin's grave, who was killed at Saint Lo, France in July of 1944 with the 4th division. In July of 2008, He was inducted into the St. Peter High School Hall of Fame with William Nutter, William Wettergren, Lyle Pearson, Sam Gault, John Annexstad, James McPherson, Al Annexstad, Mark Davis Richard Steppel, Vicki Davis and William Brekke. On September 25, 2010, He and 100 World War II Veterans flew the Honor Flight from Fort Dodge, IA to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II memorial, the Korean Memorial, the Viet Nam Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial (one of William's classmates was killed there) and Arlington National Cemetery. One of his students was a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and is buried near the Tomb. He attended every Nobel Conference since it's inception at Gustavus Adolphus College. His favorite was the conference on Immunity, dealing with Poliomyelitis and Salk and Sabin. Many years, he had students wearing braces. He was a member if the American Legion, the Minnesota Federation of Teachers, the Minnesota State Historical Society, and the National Rifle Association. Hunting, fishing and reading were his avocations. Mr. Harvey is survived; his brothers James D. Harvey and Dr. Richard L. Harvey and many nieces and nephews. More, he is survived by the 5000 students whom he taught. He was preceded in death by his parents Bud and Retta; brother Kenneth Joseph Harvey; sister and brother-in-law Mrs. Dorothy (Bernie) Carpenter; sister-in-law Janet Harvey; nephew Larry Carpenter; and niece Teri Harvey.
