Richard Whitmore, age 90 of St. Peter, died on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the Benedictine Living community in St. Peter.

Memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Union Presbyterian Church in St. Peter. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to MacCalester College or the Boy Scout Council. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Richard was born on September 22, 1923 in St. Paul to Frank and Louise (Bishop) Whitmore. He graduated from University High School in St. Paul and furthered his education at MacCalester College where he excelled in swimming and track. He graduated in 1949 with a degree in Journalism and English. Richard served in the US Army during WWII and was a Surgical Tech in a M.A.S.H. unit. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Richard was united in marriage to Florence Hackman on August 28, 1957. They lived in St. Peter and Richard was employed at the State Hospital for 16 years working as the Librarian. He was also an English teacher at Le Sueur High School. Richard was active as a Boy Scout Master, loved the outdoors, fishing, camping, boating, reading, painting, drawing, building and constructing.

Richard is survived by his daughters: Ann Briard and Alice (Lee) Schwichtenberg; grandchildren: Alex and Eli Briard, Holly (Chris) Jansma, Luke and Harley Schwichtenberg; a brother, Judson; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his brother Jud Jr. in 1943 and his wife Florence in 2005.
