Barbara Ellen Simpson

Barbara Ellen Simpson, PhD, 83, of St. Peter died Wednesday, July 22 at Oak Lawn in Mankato. Services at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter, with inurnment at the Gustavus Columbarium will be scheduled later.

Barbara Ellen was born October 17, 1942 to Roy and Mildred (Sharp) Summerville in Everson, Washington, where her parents farmed. Her mother died at an early age, and she spent much time with her wise grandmother Ellen, always eager to learn. Even in grade school, she asked the teacher, “Why do we have recess? I would rather stay inside and read.”

After she graduated from high school, she received a bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology from Washington State University, in Pullman, WA. She continued her education there, earning both master’s and doctorate degrees. Both a scholar and a clinician, she taught at Minnesota State University, Marshall, then was pleased to become part of Gustavus Adolphus College in 1971 as counseling support for students and as the first female faculty in the psychology department. She served the college faithfully and well for over 43 years. During that time, she took students to India, was thrilled to spend time at Oxford in England and served as a consultant for the St. Peter State Hospital. She is honored as part of an Endowed Chair for Professor of Psychological Science at the college.

Barbara married Justin Simpson on June 20, 1970. They were active members of Trinity Lutheran Church, where they established and endowed The Barbara and Justin Simpson Forum. Together they traveled throughout England, Europe, India, and the Caribbean. For many years, they were part of the Saintly City Cat Club in St. Paul, and enjoyed owning their Tonkinese cats. He preceded her in death in December, 2016.

Barbara is survived by her brother Jim (Chris) Summerville, nephews Spencer and Evan Summerville; and by Justin’s sister Joan (Clifford) Brock, their children Justin (Tracy McClain), Dr. Matthew (Kelly), and Brian (Marissa) Brock and 2 grand-nephews. Dr. Simpson is also survived by a godson, Matthew Robinson, his parents Tim and Sharon, and his sister Marit Shepard; many friends, students, and colleagues. Last but not least, she loved her 2 cats, whom she often described as part of her close connection with God, the Creator of all.

“Dr. Barb” appreciated the excellent care she received from the staff of Oak Lawn and St. Croix Hospice, which made the last month of her life much better than she expected. The family especially thanks Rebecca Otterness, RN, and Sherry Trullinger for their years of dedicated service that allowed Barbara to stay in her home until shortly before her death.
