Carl M. & Susan M. Johnson

Carl Marcus Johnson, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the Mayo Clinic, Mankato, MN. Susan Marie (Shean) Johnson, age 88, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at home in St. Peter, MN.

Susan was born on November 11, 1936, in Duluth, MN, to Daniel Joseph and Mary Louise Simonne (Vaillant) Shean. She was raised in Duluth and graduated from Cathedral High School. She attended the University of Minnesota, Duluth, and Lakewood Community School. She worked at 3M, as a secretary for the Minnesota House of Representatives, at Gustavus Adolphus College, and at Scholarship America.

Carl was born on September 12, 1933, in St. Peter, MN, to Chester Marcelus and Lena Clara (Renneke) Johnson. He was raised on a farm in Norseland and graduated from Gaylord High School. Carl graduated from Mankato State College in 1966 with a BA in teaching Industrial Arts. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, Carl began his 60+ year career as a farmer. He also owned the Norseland Window Company, served 16 years as a legislator in the Minnesota House of Representatives, and was a lobbyist for the Minnesota School Board Association.

Susan and Carl were united in marriage on July 3, 1981, at Scandian Grove Lutheran Church. They made their home on their farm in Norseland and later in St. Peter. They also enjoyed spending time at their cabin “up north,” as snowbirds in Tucson, AZ, and traveling to see family and friends. Susan and Carl volunteered with the Scandian Grove Lutheran Church in numerous roles along with many community-based charitable organizations in Minnesota and Arizona.

Left to remember Susan and Carl are Susan’s children: Daniel (Pamela) Grimwood, Cheryl Grimwood, David (Corinna) Grimwood, Karen (Daniel) Meixner; and Carl’s children: Cameron Johnson, Anita (Joe) Perry, and Martha (David) Benoit; 10 grandchildren: Ellen and Katherine Kimmes; Maxwell, Dexter and Paxton Benoit; Jordan (Nathan) Warner and Blake Grimwood; Heidi Grimwood, Laura (Sean) Mannix, and Erik (Kimberly) Grimwood; five great-grandchildren: Annie, Rory, and Ryder Mannix; and Emma and Molly Grimwood; Carl’s sister, Catherine Luke; Susan’s sister-in-law, Barbara Shean; and many other relatives and friends.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Peter Shean. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Adele; his brothers, Jerry (Hazel) Johnson and Robert (Corrine) Johnson; and his brother-in-law, John Luke.

Services will be 11:00am Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Scandian Grove Lutheran Church, Norseland. Visitation will be 4:00-6:00pm Friday, April 25th at St. Peter Funeral Home and 10:00am Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Scandian Grove Lutheran Cemetery.
