Dwight M. Schmit

Dwight Schmit, 68 of St. Peter, passed away June 25, 2019 at home surrounded by family. He was born August 7, 1950 in Fosston MN to John and Marilynn (Sorby) Schmit. While young, his family moved due to his father’s job in construction. The family settled in St. Peter in 1965. He graduated from St. Peter High School in 1968. After graduating, he attended Staples Area Vocational School before joining the Army. After his discharge, he was employed by Komatz Construction.

On February 14, 1976 he married Cindy Bruns. After his marriage he attended Mankato Vocational. They made their home in many cities, returning to St. Peter in 1990 where he was employed at various businesses in the St. Peter/Mankato area.

He was an avid bowler, helping coach his daughter’s high school bowling team. He also enjoyed coaching his daughter’s softball team and attending all of her games.

He is survived by his wife Cindy; daughter Tiffanie, Las Vegas NV; mother Marilynn, St. Peter; siblings: Dale (Sue) of St. Peter, Lois (Tom) Schroeder of Nicollet, Lynn (Jerry) Ulvog of Cavalier ND, and Jodi (Mike) Corrow of Little Falls; brothers-in-law Steve (Paula) Bruns of Fort Myers FL, Dave (Peggy) Bruns of Rochester and Curt (Julie) Bruns of River Falls WI; sisters-in-law Chari (Larry) Kotval of Oakdale and Judy Bruns of St. Peter; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousin and special friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, father John Schmit, sister Joreen (Larry) Mettler and brother-in-law Bob Bruns, nephew, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Memorial service is 3:00pm Monday, July 1, 2019 at St. Peter Funeral Home with visitation following from 4:00 – 6:00pm. Burial will be later at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
