Eugene was born on March 15, 1931 in New Prague to Raymond and Gertrude (O’Connell) Germscheid. He attended Country School at St. Henry and graduated from Le Center High School in 1949. Gene served in the United States Army from 1952-1954 and was stationed in Alaska as a morse code operator during the Korean War. Gene worked for Midwest Electric, 3M, and Hiniker as a machinist where he retired after 30 years. He was a lifetime member of Pioneer Power, was past commander of the Le Center American Legion and was a member of the Le Center VFW. Gene was a caretaker and groundskeeper for Marysburg Cemetery after retirement and was a tillage hired hand for several area farmers. Gene served as an usher and lector at church and served on the board of the cemetery.
Gene met his wife, Elaine Michael, at Hardeggers Dance Hall on Lake Jefferson. He asked her to dance, which lit the spark that lasted 72 years. They were married on May 7, 1953 at Marysburg Church. They enjoyed summers at their cabin on Lake Washington where they later built their house in 1984. They vacationed in Mexico and spent 17 winters in Lake Havasu, AZ. Gene and Elaine belonged to a card club for 65 fun-filled years. Gene enjoyed farming, polka dancing, snowmobiling in his younger years, playing dominos, riding his bicycle, restoring Allis Chalmer tractors and igniting his homemade cannon on the north shore of Lake Washington every Fourth of July. He was very proud of his Irish Heritage. He was a quiet and religious man with a quick wit and will be greatly missed by his wife, children and grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his wife of 72 years, Elaine; children, Colleen (Rich) McCabe, Diane (Kim) Van Sickle, Mike (Kim) Germscheid, Dave (Shelley) Germscheid, Joanne (Pat) Corrow, and Greg (Karen) Germscheid; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; brother, Karl Germscheid; and sisters-in-law, Janice (John) Lynch and Anne Germscheid. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Agnes (Mike) Hanlon; brothers, Richard Germscheid and Jack (Donna) Germscheid; sister-in-law, Sandy Germscheid; and great-grandson, Max Van Sickle.
