Evie was born October 9, 1934 in rural Good Thunder to Esther and Leo Fitterer. She attended school in Mankato and graduated June 1, 1952 from Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel, where she was a good student and athlete. Evie was united in marriage to Maurice Thelemann on June 8, 1957 at St. Francis de Sales Church, Claremont, Minnesota. In her early years, she worked in the business offices at Schwickert’s in Mankato and Green Giant in Le Sueur.

Evie and Maurie met at an old time dance, and they enjoyed many good times together dancing throughout their 63 years of marriage. Evie’s favorite band was the Thelemann Family Band, comprised of her children. As the mother of 8 children, living on a dairy/crop farm, she dedicated her life to her family. Evie kept busy with her large vegetable and flower gardens, enjoyed canning and cooking, and always made sure everyone had plenty to eat. She was creative, intelligent, and crafty making quilts for every member of the family and numerous friends. She spent many hours donating her talents to church bake sales and craft fairs. She loved to sew, quilt, and do crafts, such as corn husk dolls, grapevine wreaths, and homemade paper. Evie was a member of the St. Henry Catholic Church, taught religious ed, and was a member of Catholic Daughters. Evie had a gentle, loving demeanor and knew how to bring out the best in people. She was Maurie’s dedicated bookkeeper and financial manager of the family farm for over 45 years. After retirement, Evie and Maurie moved to St. Peter in 2003. They were members of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, sang in the church choir, and enjoyed the new experience of “living in town.” They took annual winter trips to either Texas or Arizona and loved being “snow birds” with other family members and friends. Evie’s strong faith, trust in the Lord, and devotion to the blessed Virgin Mary helped carry her through many trials in her life.

Evie will be most remembered as a beloved mother and grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend always willing to lend a helping hand and a listening ear. She loved bird watching, doing crossword puzzles, and watching her MN sports teams especially the MN Vikings and MN Twins. Evie will be remembered for all the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, baking Christmas cookies and making detailed Christmas ornaments.

Evie is survived by her 8 children, Ann (Russ) McCabe of Sleepy Eye, Mary (Paul) Engfer of New Prague, Tom (Cindy) Thelemann of Kilkenny, Jim Thelemann of Shakopee, Chris Thelemann of Holmen, WI, Pat (Kathy) Thelemann of Prior Lake, Joe (Trudy) Thelemann of St. Peter, and Liz (Walter) Zuniga of Excelsior; 31 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe (Kay) Fitterer of Venice, FL; brother-in-law, Phil (Shirley) Hodapp of Cleveland, MN; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Fitterer of Kasson, Eleanor Ostrowski of Duluth, Margaret Taylor of Golden Valley, and Rita Thelemann of Edina; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurie, in 2020; her parents, Esther and Leo Fitterer; her in-laws, Art and Mary Thelemann; sister, Kay Hodapp; brothers, Phillip and Lewis Fitterer; brothers-in-law, Art, LeRoy and Eugene Thelemann and Larry Ostrowski; sisters-in-law, Carol Fitterer, Bern Thelemann, and Helen Thelemann; great-grandson, Elliot Kelm; godson, Jason Fitterer; nephew, Jeff Hodapp; and niece, Katherine (Thelemann) Guettler.

The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation for the loving care Mom received by the staff at Benedictine Living Community Home in St. Peter, Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye, and also Mayo Hospice and Allina Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to any of these organizations.
