Gregory Alan Thompson, age 69 of Saint Peter, died surrounded by his loving family at home on December 23, 2025 after a bout with lung cancer. Greg was born May 12, 1956 in Madison, Minnesota, the first of 4 sons to Mahlon and Vivian (Lausen) Thompson. He graduated Battle Lake High and went on to Alexandria Vo-Tech for a degree in Diesel Mechanics.
Greg and Linda Van Lith met at the Rockford House dancehall in Rockford, MN on July 7, 1978 and married one year later to the date at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Linda’s hometown of Loretto, MN. They immediately settled in Wahpeton, ND and were blessed with 4 children. Most important to Greg and Linda was time spent with their children’s upbringing involving them in school programs and sports, church, hunting, fishing, camping, and scouting. The family was heavily invested in both Boy and Girl Scouts. Greg was especially proud when Eric and Garrett earned their Eagle Awards and Kristel and Cheryl earned their Gold Awards.
He was fulfilled in witnessing them all develop as “good citizens” of this great country and then going on to create their own families. It also brought great joy to Greg being a part of other kids’ lives as Cub Scout Den Leader, Troop Scoutmaster, assistant to Linda’s Girl Scout Troops, and CCD instructor at three separate parishes.
Retiring in 2019, Greg and Linda hit the road with their truck camper often with a boat or RZR in tow. From the wilderness of Alaska, the Everglades of Florida, the mountain tops of the Rockies, and back to the ocean shores. What adventures they had!
Greg is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda; children: Kristel (Jake) Seth, Eric (Rachel), Garrett, and Cheryl (Chase) Hagen; 10 grandchildren: Rylie, Hannah, Kinnick, Genavieve, Charles, Violet, Ethan, Collin, Caleb, and Claire; mother, Vivian; brothers: Brian and Steve (Linda); brothers- and sisters-in-law, uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Mahlon; Linda’s parents, Henry and Geraldine; brother, Mike; sisters-in-law Pam and Janelle; and nephew David.
