Joseph “Joe” F. Herbert, age 86 of St. Peter and formerly of rural Madison Lake, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at Ecumen Prairie Hill, St. Peter. Joseph Francis was born November 2, 1935 in Cleveland MN to Glynn and Lucille (Schmidt) Herbert. He graduated from Pemberton High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and continued to serve our country in the Army Reserve for an additional 10 years. He was first employed at Lampert Lumber in Cleveland and then became the school custodian at Cleveland High School until retirement. Joe lived on Lake Jefferson and loved to fish. He also enjoyed his annual “up north” fishing trips with the “guys”. Joe faithfully cared for his Grandparents, Frank and Mary Schmidt on their Lake Jefferson farm. He enjoyed his neighborly relationship with his uncle and aunt, Roy and Harriet Schmidt and their children, Kathy, Sue, Kim and Mel. For years into his retirement he kept up with the news at his regular coffee conversations with the “Jocko’s Cleveland Crew”. Left to remember Joe are his Sister-in-Law Mary Herbert (Roy) of Park Rapids, MN; his niece Jackie Horneman of Nevis, MN; nephews Scott Herbert, Mayer, MN; Mike Herbert, Foley, MN; and Tom Herbert, Coon Rapids, MN. Many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Glynn and Lucille Schmidt Herbert and his brother Roy Herbert. Joe’s family is grateful to the Ecumen Praire Hill Staff and Ecumen Hospice Staff. Their excellent care and compassion and loving attention will never be forgotten.
