Louis Henry Leagjeld, 88, of St. Peter, died April 16, 2023, at Ecumen Prairie Hill in St. Peter.

A visitation will take place from 1-4 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2023, at the St. Peter Funeral Home, 906 N. Washington Ave. in St. Peter.

A private funeral will be held at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minnesota.

Louis was born August 31, 1934, to Louis and Eva (Parker) Leagjeld in Clarissa, Minnesota. He grew up in Long Prairie, Minnesota where he attended country school and later Long Prairie High School. After high school, Louis worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the Army. He served two years in the US Army and spent 15 months in Korea.

After returning home, Louis worked in Minneapolis where he met Joanne Nelson. They were married on March 22, 1958. Together, they moved to Amboy, then to Wilmar, St. Peter, Sauk Centre and finally settled back in St. Peter. Throughout Louis’ life he worked for a plumber, managed a gas company branch location, moved into sales while owning a successful liquor store with Joanne, and found success as a real estate agent. In his free time, Louis enjoyed spending time with his family, especially grandchildren, being a snowbird in Arizona, going to auctions with his wife, sitting out on his Sauk Centre deck overlooking Cedar Lake, garage sales, selling antiques, and happy hour with friends and family.  

Louis is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joanne; children, Gayle (Kevin) Olson of St. Peter, Brian (Leslie) of Eagle Lake, and Brett (Lori) of Iowa City, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters, Karen Ward and Diane (Gary) Zastrow; brother, David; and sister-in-laws, Burt, Diane, Carol and Shirley Leagjeld.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents; son, Craig; and his brothers, sisters, and in-laws, Glen and Iona, Hollie and Margaret, Oma and Ronald & Joe, Ted and Sue, Shirley and Leo, Bonnie and Al, Donnie, Phyllis and Carleton, Kenny, and Gary.
