Louise B. Hoogenboom, age 89, of St. Peter, Minnesota, died peacefully the afternoon of Sunday, February 4, 2024.
Louise was born April 18, 1934, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio to James E. and Sarah (Hervey) Brown. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School and attended Depauw University, where she met her future husband, Bernard "Bernie" Hoogenboom. They were married on August 27, 1955, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Louise completed her bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1956. In 1958, Louise and Bernie moved to St. Peter, Minnesota with their young family. In addition to raising three sons, she worked for Delta Pi Epsilon and was a librarian for the St. Peter Public Library until her retirement in 1990.
Louise appreciated and sought out adventure alongside her husband Bernie. Their sense of exploration took them to live in the Netherlands with their boys in 1971 and to live in Hirakata, Osaka, Japan in 1991 to teach English at the Kansai Gaidai University. Louise and Bernie loved the outdoors including camping, skiing, canoeing, and visiting the family cabin they built together on Birch Lake. They also shared quiet moments of reading, knitting, and completing crossword puzzles together.
When Bernie was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, Louise confronted the new challenges courageously and lovingly devoted her time to his care until his passing in 2015. She then boldly survived several liver cancer treatments and adopted a new kitten companion, Dolly. She always greeted friends with a smile and dearly loved her family.
Louise is survived by sons: Peter (Pat), and Jon (Sabrina); six grandchildren: Hannah (Colby), Cooper, Bennett, Reed, Sarah, and William; daughter-in-law Tomoko; sister Sarah "Sally"; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bernie in 2015; son Dirk in 2021; and sister, Mary in 2004.
