He was baptized at the West Center Baptist Church in Madison, SD, and is a 1944 graduate of Eastern High School in Madison. He farmed for one-and-a-half years after graduation and then served in the United States Air Force from 1946-48, spending much of this time at the Yokota Air Base in Yokohama, Japan. Following his two-year stint in the Air Force, he attended General Beadle State College from 1948-1950. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Williams on March 19, 1951, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison.
After they married, they lived in Madison on a farm about two miles from the Richter homestead. While farming, he was a supervisor of 48 dealers at Farmers Hybrid, a seed corn and swine breeding company in Hampton, IA. Following his back operation in 1964 and completion of his ag-banking program at Pipestone Vocational School, the family moved in 1970 in Cleveland, MN, where Lowen was employed as president of the Cleveland State Bank. His life in Cleveland included serving on many community committees. He retired from the Cleveland Bank in 1993, worked as a realtor from 1993-1998, and was an avid golfer. Lowen and Dorothy resided in Cleveland until 2003. They then moved to Saint Peter to continue enjoying their retirement. During retirement, they enjoyed taking trips and watching the grandchildren grow up, including attending their school and athletic activities. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Cleveland, where he served as a choir member, deacon, and trustee for many, many years.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Greg (Paula) of Buffalo, SD, Larry (Steve Brandt) of Mexico City, Mexico, Jolene Christensen of Madison Lake, Lana (Mike) Wenner of Nicollet, and Lori (Kurt) Zins of Nicollet; brother, Cecil Richter and John Richter.
