Merle E. Hedeen, age 97, of St. Peter died on May 27, 2026 at Benedictine Living Community.
Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Peter Funeral Home with visitation starting at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, St. Peter.
Merle was born on March 10, 1929 in Havard County, near Maple Leaf, IA, daughter of Anton and Elizabeth (Knippling) Roman. She attended the rural school near her home. Merle was a nanny for several years and worked as a waitress. On January 3, 1955, Merle was united in marriage to George “Vern” Hedeen at the Assumption Church in Cresco, IA by the Rev. T.J. Carpender. They made their home in several towns in Minnesota: Jackson, Windom, Mankato, and finally St. Peter in 1957. Merle liked to garden, vegetables and flowers. She enjoyed sharing her vegetables with neighbors and friends. She loved growing tulips most of all. Merle loved the outdoors. She helped her neighbors and friends wherever needed.
Merle is survived by her three sons, Joseph of Wichita, KS, James (Twyla) of River Falls, WI, and William of Seattle, WA and three grandchildren, Jonathan, Mandy, and Evan. She was preceded in death by her husband, George “Vern” in October 1990; parents; sisters, Alice Haskovee and Velma Nolan; and brother, Bernard Roman.
