C. Milton "Milt" Brostrom has taken his final journey on July 30, 2025 joining his wife Elaine in heaven exactly 7 months after her passing. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, at First Lutheran Church in St. Peter.
Milt was born Jan. 30, 1927, the first son of The Rev. Carl and Ruth Brostrom. When he was 3 years old, his family moved to Ironwood, MI until 11th grade. Milt graduated from White Bear Lake High School in 1943 followed by serving in the U.S. Army from 1944-46. In 1949 he graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College and began post-grad work in mathematics at the University of MN where he received his Masters in 1958. He did additional graduate work in the fields of mathematics and computer science at the University of Kansas.
In 1950 Milt began his teaching career at Dana College, Luther Junior College, married the love of his life Elaine Madison in 1952, then continued his teaching career at Gustavus Adolphus College in 1955 until retirement in 1991. He established and headed the academic computer center in the 60s and 70s. At the time of his passing Milt was the oldest living faculty member of Gustavus. He was long-time faculty marshal and served the college for 27 years also serving as representative to state and national athletics. He’d been active as a volunteer at First Lutheran Church, Gustavus Alumni Association and Habitat for Humanity. In 2008 Milt was inducted as a benefactor, into the GAC Athletics Hall of Fame.
Milt is survived by, and will be sorely missed by, his children Jim and Shari Brostrom, Jenny and Tim Tolley, his four grandchildren, the lights of his life, Nikki (Doug) Bellrichard, Eric (Amber) Sjostrom, Andrew Westphal, and Matt Brostrom, 7 great-grandchildren, Kennedi Westphal, David Bellrichard, Asher Sjostrom, Ella Sjostrom, Oliver Brostrom, Conway Brostrom, Briar Westphal, his brother Paul Brostrom and sister Helen Ihrig, as well as many, many nieces and nephews.
