George Raymond Schmidt

August 22, 1927 — July 13, 2015

Cleveland resident, George Raymond Schmidt, 87, died Monday, July 13, 2015, at St. Peter. Visitation will be held Friday, July 17, 2015, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., at the Church of Christ in Cleveland. Funeral service immediately following visitation at the church, Pastor John Kester officiating. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery, Scotch Lake, Cleveland. George was born August 22, 1927, to Gilbert Charles and Thelma Luella (Bird) Schmidt, in St. Peter. He attended Country School near Cleveland, and later Cleveland Public School. He married Marilyn Marie Kopp on August 11, 1950, in Cleveland. He worked for the Babcock Company and Cargill. In 1960, they purchased a farm in Cleveland Township on the Southeast side of Scotch Lake, formerly owned by his Great Grandparents, John C. and Elizabeth (Rabe) Schmidt. He was a Dairy farmer and also raised hogs and cash crops. They moved to the town of Cleveland in 1985. In April, 2015, they moved to Ecumen Prairie Hill, in St. Peter. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ in Cleveland. He enjoyed being on the farm, "farm talk," drawing, spending time with his family, visiting with people, collecting rocks, fishing and hunting. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Patricia (Jerry) Scheffert of Le Center, Cheryl (Robert) Evenson of Mankato, Cynthia (Thomas) McCabe of Cleveland; one son, Scott (Debra) Schmidt of Cleveland; 8 grandchildren, Ryan (Keri) Evenson, Jennifer (Ryan) Ryg, Jamie (Allison) Schmidt, Randee (Shawn) Onken, Ashley (Jeremy) Clifton, Nicole McCabe, Dana (Chad) Schmidt, and Whitney McCabe; 13 great grandchildren, Mason, Madison, Olivia, Ryley, Avery, Owen, Elise, Blake, Carsyn, Ava, Adelynn, Cody and Autumn; two sisters, Virginia Filler of St. Peter, and Janice Dillon of Faribault; three brothers, Robert (Barb) of North Mankato, Roger (Andrea) of Madison Lake, and Terry (Monica) of Cleveland. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Marion Schmidt, Marlene Ballman, and Lois Herman; two brothers, Donald and James (Jimmy) Schmidt. St. Peter Funeral Home - Klein Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
